A village with lots of character
Tartaras is a peaceful village with houses grouped around the old church and the town hall.

Some history
The town’s origins go way back to the Romanesque era. Tartaras was then in the heart of a coal basin developed in the 19th century.

Essential visiting
The church Saint-Pierre es Lien
This Roman style church dates back to the 15th century.
The bell is classified in the inventory of historical monuments.

The tunnel of the pierced rock
A jewel of the canal de Givors, this underground passage was unique for the time as it was pierced through the rock at the end of the 18th century.

The double lock at the Pierced Rock
This is a fine example of a double lock (with two steps), which enabled boats to pass through a difference in height of eight metres.

The sarcophagus
These were no doubt discovered during coal mining in the 19th century in the village. You can see one in front of the town hall (from around the 13th century), and another can be found on the way out of the village.

A statue of Charles Bossut
He was the most famous child from the village and was called Charles Bossut (1730-1814), he was a mathematician, and Diderot’s collaborator for the maths part of the famous Encyclopedia, and the father of experimental hydrodynamics. His bust was inaugurated in 1933 and is next to the church of Saint-Pierre es Liens.
