Saint-Joseph back to map

On the first foothills of the Monts du Lyonnais

Situated at the very far north-east of the Vallée du Gier, Saint-Joseph appears to be a slightly inclined plateau, delimited by the valley of Bosançon, where the two departments, the Rhône and the Loire, separate.
Two small hills appear and are reminders that the Monts du Lyonnais are not too far away.

Some history
The commune developed the agriculture and wine growing industries. Wrought iron work and mining were the two most important activities.
At the start of the 20th century, inhabitants started to seek antimoine. The gold myth was born.

Vestige of the Roman aqueduct of Gier

The Regard du Monteiller
Called a well because of its depth (8.60 metres). This is only part of this incredible historic work.

La pierre du Rieu (The stone of Rieu)
The aqueduct was used as a main sewer due to the defectiveness on one of the sewer pipes. This stone is similar to the Chagnon stone.
Discover the aqueduct footpath for a total of four to five hours of walking.
Itinerary available at the Tourist Office.

Suggestions for outings
Four waymarked footpaths will enable you to discover a rural environment along waymarked footpaths. These are probably very old. Many of the crossroads are marked and decorated with crosses.
In the guide available at the Tourist Office you will find all the footpaths.
