Saint-Etienne
Presentation
At the crossroads of savoir-faire and design

Situated in the south of the Loire department, Saint-Étienne is surrounded by gems of nature – The Loire Gorges and the Pilat Regional Nature Park are two of the most beautiful examples…

Some history
Towards the end of the 18th century, the arms manufacture was the main activity (in 1793 Saint-Étienne was called Armeville).
In the 19th century the town developed rapidly, around the Grand’rue (the main high street) (the street was cut open in 1802) following to a north/south axis.
Coal mining had reached its peak; Mettallurgy, bicycle and ribbon factories constituted the three other pillars of industry in Saint Etienne. In the 19th century Saint-Étienne was a pioneer town in French industrial development. Nowadays, with the transformation of the town’s image due to urban renovation, Saint-Étienne, classified as a “Town of Art and History” arouses interest and attracts many people.
