This town currently occupies both banks of the river named Gier.


Rive de Gier
Some history
During the war, Rive de Gier played an important part in the Resistance.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, the industry of Rive-de-Gier organised itself around coal extraction. Ironwork workshops and glass manufacturers formed the economic motors of the town.

The Etaings chimney
108 metres high, it is classified as a Historical Monument.

The pit mine Combélibert
It can be found in the west of the town, near the Sardon “échangeur”. The town hall, former Hôtel du Canal

The Couzon railway tunnnel

The Gourd-Marin mine pit
It is located in the station quarter, along the Gier, and is built out of red bricks.

Historical visits
The Rive de Gier historical association organises visits of these sites for groups.


Activities and leisure
This educational farm offers tours of the farm, workshops, donkey rides, fishing in the lake, birthday parties.
