The gunsmith tradition …
The village of La Tour-en-Jarez has preserved some traces in its architecture of the medieval era.


Some history
There were many ironworks in the village because La Tour-en-Jarez and L’Etrat were significant metallurgic centres in the 14th century. Men were mainly gunsmiths and the women were winders.

The village centre
From medieval times, a tower and part of an enclosing wall remain.

The church
Worth a visit and it is classified as a Historical Monument.
The statue of Saint Marie Madeleine (15th century) is situated on the left side of the chancel.
The oldest and largest of the four bells, with relief inscriptions and gothic features.

The roadside cross
A restored panoramic viewpoint offers you an unrestricted view over Saint-Étienne and the surrounding area.

The gunsmith’s workshop
In the heart of the village centre, the gunsmith’s workshop is a reminder of the gunsmith tradition. Long ago, plates and trigger mechanisms would have been made here.
