Situated in the heart of the Lyonnais Mounts, Fontanès offers a tremendous panorama. With its village centre at 850m altitude and its highest point at 900m, Fontanès is one of the loftiest communities in the territory.
A little history
Fontanès developped around its castle attested since 1090 by the presence of knights.
The Castle
Essential visiting
The Castle : The current Castle dates back to the 18th century, when it was rebuilt because of a fire.
The pigeon-hole attic : It is situated in the south part of the Castle’s park. During the Middle Ages, the construction of a pigeon loft was a privilege reserved to Lords. It is currently being restored.
The site of Rio : This site hides a small wealth, rich in authenticity and witness to a difficult daily life. The cross, watering place and the stone of the dead. During your walks, you can see the old 17th century cross, situated on a water source (sign of water protection). The bachat, other watering place
The rectangular shaped bachat, other water place, can also be found in the park.
The Wash House : Dating from 190 and used until 1970, it is supplied by the source water. The Seven Pines observation point : Highest point at 899m.
An orientation table completes the site’s geography. The countryside goes from the Northeast of the Mont Blanc, to the South with the Mézenc Mountains. The Mont du Pilat is in the foreground and the City of Saint-Étienne can be seen in a basin and on the hills.
