Some history
It seems that Cellieu is the Latin translation of Celae locus which means “the place of the monastery”. The name Cellieu first appeared in the 16th century.
At the beginning of our era, the region was marked by Roman occupation.
In the 12th century and up until the Revolution, the parish of Cellieu depended on the region of Lyon under the name “Cellieu en Lyonnais”.
At the start of the 20th century, the commune had many vines as well as coal extraction wells which were closed in 1946. Today, Cellieu is renowned for its many different varieties of cherry. 500 tonnes a year are produced. Altitude, which varies from 404metres to 774metres, and the relief are favourable elements in the culture of cherries.
